Free Community Thanksgiving Meal!

I wanted to share an announcement from Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering about their annual free community Thanksgiving meal for those in the West Seattle area who are interested:

Join us for a Free Community Thanksgiving Meal at the Hall at Fauntleroy in West Seattle [9131 California Avenue SW]on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22th from 12 noon to 3:00 PM.  All are welcome for a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings prepared by Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering Executive Chef Michael Chase.    This is the 14th year that Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes owners Meg and David Haggerty and David Meckstroth have hosted this wonderful dinner.  They are joined by a wonderful group of volunteers who help greet our welcome guests and serve dinner.

We will gladly accept donations for desserts.  They can be dropped off at the Hall the day before Thanksgiving between 10 and 4 or on Thanksgiving Day after 10 AM.

My husband and I have attended this for the past several years, as our family is 3,000 miles away. The meal is free and absolutely fabulous and I truly appreciate their generosity in offering this each year to the community. All are welcome, from people who are homeless and/or hungry to those who simply do not want to be alone for Thanksgiving. If you're looking for a place to be with others and have an enjoyable meal, do consider it. They usually have a table set up where you can donate some winter clothing as well for those who need them.  No reservations are necessary - just show up!

Access Bars Class - July 29th

 I just learned about an interesting healing method called The Bars through Access Consciousness. There are 32 Bars of energy that run through your head, each corresponding to a different area of life, like Money, Control, Creativity, Body, Awareness, and many more. Holding these points on the head releases energy and begins to unravel where you are functioning from autopilot instead of awareness, and can help release destructive behavior patterns, past hurts, losses and fears.

Knowing what I know from Health Kinesiology and energy work, The Bars sounded very interesting to me, both on a personal level and as something to offer to clients along with Health Kinesiology and Reconnective Healing.

 

There will be a training class in West Seattle this coming Sunday, July 29th, and there is still space available. What Are You Settling For?

Are there things in your life that you're settling for? Putting up with even though they're not for the greater good? I saw a link to this blog post called 20 Things Life Is Too Short To Tolerate on the Marc and Angel Hack Life blog that I wanted to share with you.

I've done a lot of personal work on not tolerating things that don't serve me. I think I've been pretty successful at it too. But this list was a little starting because I realized I've still got some work to do. (#5 anyone? 12? Hmmm ...)

I love the final line in their post:

Butterfly Balance Featured in Seattle Natural Awakenings

I was recently interviewed for an article in the January 2012 issue of Seattle Natural Awakenings Magazine about Health Kinesiology, along with my friend and fellow HK practitioner Bobbie Rice of Sacred Elements in Minnesota.

Right now, to my knowledge, I am the only HK practitioner in the Seattle area, so unless you've met me, seen me as a client, or read this blog, it's likely you haven't heard of it before. I absolutely love the work that I do and the results I've seen in my clients, and I'd like to make Health Kinesiology a household name in Seattle!

When Good Resolutions Aren't Good

I always find it interesting to watch the marketing of New Years Resolutions. I walked into Costco a few days before New Years, and the entryway was lined with diet programs, exercise machines, scales, stop-smoking systems, books on health and fitness - you name the typical resolution, there was a solution right there for the taking.

On January 1st I was watching TV, and not 10 minutes into turning it on, I was greeted by a commercial about how you need to start the New Year off right by having weight loss surgery. (Uh, no thanks!)

 

Sure, I've made my share of Resolutions in my lifetime, and there's such a high failure rate on them if you talk to people in February each year. It wasn't until I tried applying the concepts of Health Kinesiology to New Years Resolutions that I started to understand why that might be.

You are a unique, beautiful individual. You can come into my office with the same issue as another client, but your body will have an entirely different, unique way to deal with that issue. And sometimes an issue that sounds like a "no-brainer" in terms of benefit to someone/everyone will have all kinds of issues tied up in it for you that make it not the best thing to pursue without doing other work first. Let me explain.

One of the most popular New Years Resolutions is for people to change their eating habits and choose "better" food. What exactly is "better" foods? Sounds pretty reasonable to think that "everyone" would be better off if we ate more vegetables, for instance. But what if you're allergic to a certain vegetable and don't even realize it? You'll eat it, not feel your best, and then stop trying to eat "better." Or you might have tried to diet many, many times (like I have) and gained all the weight back. Your self-critic might be telling you that you'll fail this time like you always did. Or perhaps a friend or relative was unkind to you regarding you giving up on your diet in the past, so the thought of dieting is stressful to your energy system, putting you out of balance.

Not every seemingly "good" resolution is good for everyone. Want to ask your body some questions about what would be good for you? Or do some work to clear out the junk holding you back from achieving those goals? A Health Kinesiology session might be just what you need to find out what your body is telling you it wants and needs to be the best person you can be in 2012.

 

 

Free Movie Screening: Forks Over Knives

I wanted to share information about a free screening (10/28 in Seattle, but also in various cities nationwide throughout the rest of the year) of the movie Forks Over Knives.

I had not heard of this movie previously before seeing this event posted on Facebook, but it looks interesting. From the Forks Over Knives website:

The feature film Forks Over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods.

While I personally am making these types of changes to my diet, I just wanted to clarify that I do not insist that my clients do so as well. The beauty of Health Kinesiology is that we can fine tune health suggestions such as diet on an individual basis, and what works for one person may not be ideal for another, and you may not even need to make any changes. However, since I do focus on health and wellness in general, I hoped that the concept might be interesting for you to learn about, even if you do not agree or follow it in practice. And a free movie is always good. I'm sorry I'll be missing it as I'll be travelling for class that day.

Stenciling Storm Drains & Protecting Waterways and Wildlife

I never gave much thought to the sewer storm drains growing up. It was implied that it was not really different than a garbage can. If you can't find a garbage can, then throw it into the sewer - that's what I did growing up and into adulthood. I always figured it was better than the alternative of just throwing it on the ground. (Of course, the real alternative would have been to hold onto it until you find a proper garbage can, but that never occurred to me.) If someone had only told me sooner that I was potentially harming (or killing) fish and wildlife, and contaminating our waterways with all the trash I'd thrown into the sewer in my lifetime, I never would've done it - or at least stopped sooner than I did.

Following up on yesterday's post about medicine disposal and why not to put it into the drains/sewer/trash, I learned today about something that the City of Seattle is doing to help raise awareness.

Apparently, you can become a volunteer to stencil a storm drain with:

Dump No Waste
Drains to Stream, Lake or Bay

I've actually seen similar stencils around town, now that I think of it:

 If every drain had a stencil like that, no one could claim ignorance as to where the waste is going. I think it's a brilliant idea!

From the Seattle Public Utilities Website:

"Some people believe that storms drain carry the waste to a sewage treatment for cleanup. Not true! Some drains go directly into the nearest stream or lake or Puget Sound, and so do the hazardous chemicals, pesticides, paints, antifreeze and used motor oil people pour down storm drains every year.

The Seattle Aquarium estimates that more than 2 million gallons of used motor oil ends up in Puget Sound each year. That’s enough to fill a medium-sized tanker! But even small amount of oil can smother fish eggs and developing shellfish in our lakes and streams. Just 1 pint of oil causes a slick the size of 2 football fields."

Isn't that disturbing?  I'm going to call to become a volunteer to stencil drains in my neighborhood, and hope that those of you in Seattle will do so as well.

And if you're not in Seattle, I urge you to consider calling your local municipality and see if they have a similar program, or if you can start one. Or at the very least, think of the environment, consider this information and do NOT use storm drains for trash disposal.

Improving the World

What is one thing that you can do right now to help "improve the world"?

Do you think that improving yourself counts? You're part of the world, aren't you? Wouldn't living to your highest potential also help the world? What does "improving the world" mean to you?

Everything in the world is made up of energy. We all interact with everything around us on an energetic level and are far more intertwined than you might imagine. Sometimes it's easy to think of ourselves as being alone, and that our actions make no difference to anyone or anything around us.

Tonight Phil and I are going to attend a blessing ceremony for the Duwamish Waterway - you can find more information about this by clicking here. It promises to be an "hour of Reiki, Peruvian shamanism, gong, Native American flute and a special crystal singing bowl ritual to bless the waters of the Duwamish River." This is my contribution to improving the world today.

The Business Side of Healing

As a healer, all I've wanted to do is get out there and work with people to help them heal and be the very best they can be. My impulsive Aries nature would agree - just get out there and do it already! For better or worse, the part of me that's worked in corporate law for 29 years (that long? really?) knows better, and knows that there is a practical business side to all of it as well.

When I talk about  business, I'm not talking about the money making aspect of business. Sure, that's nice too - I plan on supporting myself with my passion. But there are certain legalities in terms of running a business, and all that stuff has had me bogged down for a bit, making my creativity and passion take a back seat.

My background in corporate law has been most helpful in terms of leading me to the correct resources. Seattle SCORE, affiliated with the US Small Business Administration, gives personal, one-on-one counseling to small business owners (or people considering small business), and best of all it's free. If you're not in Seattle, you can find their national site here and search by zip code.

I am thrilled to announce that I am now officially licensed by the State of Washington and the City of Seattle to do business legally under the name Butterfly Balance! Today I also set up my bank accounts for my business. It was so important for me to work in integrity - to do things legally, and to pay taxes on the money I earn. 

Now that most of that pesky business stuff is out of the way, now I can focus my attention on helping people and getting the word out about my practice.
